Sorry em but dannyphan89 is right.
"you DON'T study medicine when you're an undergraduate in the US. you study the science prerequisites (math, physics, chemistry, biology) to apply for med school. oh and btw, med school usually takes 6-8 years to complete (school work and residency). chance to get into med school for international student is super slim. highly recommend you search for AMSA (American Medical Student Association) and do more research."
So if you want to be an architect as you said above, you will have to go to school with strong architecture program instead of just doing arts in general as you said, or you can have an arts major and then go to grad school for architecture later. Nevertheless, with all the pre-med requirements, I think you can hardly do both at the same time.
And also, volunteering at the hospital of the city and joining arts club are totally different from really working as a doctor and an architect.
It's nice to have dreams but it's wise to be reasonable.
SugarPie: I don't think Duc is afraid, he is just being realistic. You will come to see that sometime in order for you to grow, you need people to tell you that what you are doing is not good instead of covering up and is afraid to hurt your feeling. The one that will suffer the most from the sugar coated words is you since you don't know what you did wrong and how to fix it. It is difficult to accept criticism but it is important to learn how to accept them. Both Duc and I is (have been) in college and we know the level of work and commitment that we have to put in. He is just afraid that you might lose your sleep. Doing both architecture and premed probably will mean that you will not be able to sleep at all. Just to give you a rough idea, the beginning art class is tough. You have to spend hours upon hours trying to finish your assignments. All of my friends who have taken the class complained about the ridiculous amount of work that they have to put in and this is only the introductory art class. In order for you to do well in both architecture and pre-med you have to dedicate yourself to both. Architecture alone, you have to put in ample of time, you will also have to spend time conducting research and volunteering in order to get to med school too. It seem like you really want to get into a top med-program, that mean you have to work even harder to get into med-school (possible getting a 4.0 GPA).
We have not even touch upon the experiences that you have to attain for architecture if you want a job in architecture (well what is the point of a degree if you can't use it in the field). Don't think that college will give you that experience, you have to search for it by working on projects with professor or doing internships.
We just want you to be aware of the work that you have to go through. If you want to do both we are not stopping you, because this your life, but think more critically.
like the saying:
"Một vợ nằm giường lèo hai vợ nằm chèo queo. Ba vợ thì xuô'ng chuồng heo mà nằm"
This saying applies to many instances and also includes your. If you concentrate on 1 thing at a time, your chance of succeeding is much higher.
Finally, if you want to know more about architecture, you should look for someone who is in architecture. There are a few people in VA that are in architecture. Asking it in this page won't help you much since all of us are in the life sciences.
Good luck with your life endeavors. If you are able to complete both architecture and pre-med and get into med school, let me know. I want to learn how you did it.
@Quy: on the topic of full aid for med school, i think you will have to do some research on your own. Sugarpie is just writing on an assumption. Or ask to see there is anyone here who actually study in UK. It seem to be that many people here in VA are studying in the US. I am going on a while guess that maybe full aid is also quite limited in UK. In addition, it seem that many people in VA just like to study in the US in general and have not done a lot of research else where.
Also, general math, chem, bio, and physics are not the only 4 classes you have to take for pre-med. You also have to to anatomy and physiology, biochem, cell bio, organic chem and a few other electives and non-science courses.
International studen tuition is alway 2x higher than resident, that's why we need your help, sugarpie

lol. afraid of what? afraid of telling you the truth? lmao. my encouragement for you is to stop being ignorant and do some research. oh btw, I'm old enough yet have enough knowledge/experience to call you "kid". sure, who cares how you plan your destiny. so enjoy your dreamAnyway, thank you for your highly recommendation. But I will plan my destiny by myself and do what I want. I know it s just your opinions or maybe your advises but if I were you, I would give some good words to encourage instead of being afraid and telling "kid" :-).

it's 3 a.m, you're still doing HW and writing your research paper at the same time. they are all due by morning. it's when you just wanna shoot yourself. You have to spend hours upon hours trying to finish your assignments.
anyway. peace. I need some sleep.

Just finish your medical school in Vietnam. That's virtually impossible for you to study medicine in the US, unless you're a US citizen/genius. What you need to do to get to a medical school is to finish 4 years of undergrad and get a Bachelor degree (preferably in a US college, which poses another problem: you need to get to a US college first), do a lot of volunteering, extracurricular stuff, experience in the health-care field, and do research. You need to maintain a high GPA (at least 3.8 to remain competitive, 3.9 is recommended for an international student), take the MCAT exam and get a score of 30+ (again, more is recommended for an international student). You also need letters of recommendation from your professors, research mentors, or work supervisors. If you are considered competitive by the school, they might invite you for an interview, where you have to demonstrate your ability to finish the program and communicate effectively with the patients, your understanding and passion for medicine, and other things that I don't know about. If you do well enough, the school might admit you, and you can start you 4 years of medicine school. You'll have to work really hard to finish medicine school in 4 years, or else you might take 5 or more years. You then can do your residency, which range from 3 to 7 years depends on what field you're going to. You might also need to spend a few more years doing fellowship. That makes a total of 4 years undergrad + 4 years medicine + 3 to whatever years residency + 0 to whatever years of fellowship = 11 to whatever years before you become a real physician. Also consider that medicine school is expensive and you're probably paying everything yourself (financial aids for medical school for international student are minimal), which can cost >$200,000 for the 4 years in medical school, not to mention your undergrad. Consider that it's already November and you're probably not gonna make it for this application cycle, the earliest you can start undergrad in 2012, medical school 2016, and become a physician 2023 (I repeat, the EARLIEST). Are you okay with getting a job only when you're already in your 30's? If your passion is just to become a physician, just finish medical school in Vietnam and do residency abroad if you can. Your school is a great school; I know tons of great physicians who graduated from your school and do years of residencies abroad. You school also has a lot of abroad programs that you can take. It isn't worth it to throw away everything you've achieved in Vietnam to pursue a subtle chance of getting into a medical school in the US with the cost of hundreds of thousand dollars and at least a dozen years. Now the problem comes down to why you want to study medicine in the US. If you have a really good reason for that, then you can continue and find out more about how to do it; otherwise my sincere advice is to finish medical school in Vietnam, and if you still desire, do a residency abroad.
I agree with every other reply to you. You can't imagine how demanding the pre-med course load and requirements are. Also, I don't think you can be an architect after completing your 4-year undergrad of combined pre-med and architecture (probably B.A. or B.S.). You need more than that (B.Arch. or M.Arch.) to earn your license and make sure your projects don't "sập" and "lún." Peace.
Chẳng hiểu cái thông tin cuộc sống ở US thuộc loại an toàn nhất thế giới là móc từ đâu ra, chỉ biết là hàng năm United Nation vẫn dùng chỉ số GPI (Global Peace Index) để đánh giá độ an toàn của các quốc gia. Kết quả năm 2010 thì VN đứng thứ 38, Germany 16, UK 31, Canada 14... còn cái quốc gia "thuộc loại an toàn nhất thế giới" của chú mày nói thì rank tận thứ 85, tự vào đây mà kiểm tra không lại bảo anh nói điêu.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Peace_Index

Could we talk in a constructive way and stop swearing, please?
Why do u need to give the thread opener that long explanation ? Clearly, the obviously answer is : please give up! medical schools in the US is beyond his/her reach, either in financial or academic aspect. If he's one of the geniuses who will get scholarship to medical school, he would have not gone to VA to ask a question like this. Your "constructive" explanation simply make his dream die faster, right?

Cuộc sống tại US thuộc loại an toàn nhất trên thế giới.

Lol are you just pissed out because I asked everyone to stop writing irrelevant stuff and using bad words. "Có tật giật mình" lol. Yeah but I want to tell him/her why it's impossible. If you were him/her, would you believe me if I simply say "It's impossible," or would you just waste more time looking for information because that answer is worthless? If you would just believe that, it explains a lot about your level of thinking and the swear words you used.
funny how you guys argue cuz of an ignorant kid.

But what abt dental school/pharmacy schoool? Is the chance to be admitted into dental/pharmacy schoool higher than medical school? As I know, unlike in Vietnam (where you can study dentistry, pharmacy and medical in a same university), in the US dental school, phamarcy school and medical school are 3 different things, aren't they? So are they as hard as medical school?
I intend to major in Dental Hygiene in undergraduate, then apply for dental school. Is it easier to get into dental school by majoring in Dental Hygiene?
Dental school and pharmacy is relatively easier than med school. I personally don't know the statistic of international students going into these fields. I would think that since these are professional schools, they will not provide much aids (for US citizens and international students). If you want to go into these fields, the process is similar to med school. You have to be in pre-dental or pre-pharm track. If your undergrad don't offer these tracks, you can look online at the different schools that offer these professions and see the undergrad prerequisites. I know that both of these programs require you to take a test similar to MCAT, but a bit easier. For pharmacy ít's PCAT but i don't know what it's called for dental. I don't think dental hygiene is actually a major at any college, it is a 2 years associate degree, so it will not help you much. I can be wrong, but you can definitely search online. Just look for dental or pharmacy prerequisites or pre-pharm or pre-dental.
For dental it's DAT.
Dental and pharmacy are relatively easier than medical school. It doesn't matter what you major in college; most medical/dental/pharmacy schools state that they do not have a preference.
dental and pharm schools may not have a preference of what major u did in college but they do require that u take some bio/chem classes, such as Organic Chem and such.
As u said, us knowing each other is fate. Even if we do part, i will still have faith and if we are bound by fate, we will meet again.

it's true that by nature, engineering is hard to get good grade and the GPA threshold is usually lower for engineering applicants (a 3.5 GPA in engineering is as good as a 3.7 in other majors). still the basic requirement to apply for engineering graduate program is still a minimum of cumulative 3.0 GPA. to be honest, I don't think it's that crazy to get a cumulative 3.0 GPA. it's kinda bias to say this, but how could you guarantee an excellent performance in graduate school if you cannot reach the 80th percentile of your class?
although research experience, GRE, LOR, personal statement are other factors in the application, still your academic performance is important.
Yes it is possible to go to phârmacy school depend on which state. I am an international student, and currently I am in phârmacy school in the US. Medical school is also possible but is a bit harder and expensive.![]()
I think that in a lot of uni, there isn't any "real" pharmacy or dental school because they are departments that belong to medical school. And I also think that you have a lot more chance to get in if you have done your bachelor in US

I plan to apply for graduate school by the end of this year, so hopefully I can get admission for 2012 after I finish my B.S. degree in biomedical engineering. I've started looking for grad school since last year. Beside UC Irvine, which I have streamlined admission due to my accelerated status, here are some schools that I plan to apply:
1. Washington University in St. Louis
2. University of Virginia
3. Duke University
4. Rice University
5. MIT
6. University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
7. Univesity of Washington
Here's my profile, if you have experience in applying for grad school (especially science/engineering), please take a quick look for me and give me some advice:
1. GPA: - Lower Division (Community college): 3.85
- Upper Division (UC Irvine, current): 3.62
2. GRE: N/A. I will take this summer
3. Research experience:
- 1 year in vascular/tissue engineering research lab.
- 1 second author journal (Cardiovascular Research. submitted)
- 1 individual research project (on-going, expected to finish by the end of this year. original. funded by CALIT2 and UCI)
4. Honors/Awards:
- UCI School of Engineering Undergraduate Accelerated Program (grad school streamlined admission)
- UCI School of Engineering Undergraduate Research Fellowship (stipend)
- Edwards Lifesciences Center for Advanced Cardiovascular Technology Research Fellowship (stipend)
- UCI Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (stipend)
- CALIT2 Multidisciplinary Design Program (research grant & training)
- UCI Beall Family Foundation Scholarship
- 2010 Phi Theta Kappa All-CA Academic Team (2nd team)
5. Letters of Recommendation: expected 3 good letters. one from my current research mentor (department chair of Molecular Bio & Biochem at UCI), one from my professor/academic advisor/research co-mentor (department chair of Biomedical Engineering at UCI and director of Edwards Lifesciences Center), and one from my professor/advisor (department chair of Biological Sciences at my community college). they all know me very well and agree to write me good LoR.
I'm not sure if anyone here is doing BME/BE graduate study at these schools. Otherwise, if you're attending these schools (undergrad/grad, any major), please let me know:
1. How do you feel about the school in general?
2. How do you feel about the city and the people there?
3. How is the living cost there? Is your financial aid/scholarship/fellowship enough to cover all the cost?
4. Beside the academic aspect and financial assistance, is there any reason that makes you choose this school?
Thanks.
