Default GRE and PhD Application Issues

Hey guys,

It seems most people on VA are much more internet-savvy than I am.

Any advice on how to get some past GRE test samples? I did some google searches but I seem to have limited ability in navigating the internet.

Any feedbacks will be great.

Another must-know material is the Barron's wordlist. Buy the book.

When are you taking it ?

wow, thanks a bunch, plum

perhaps in the next 3 weeks... Do you know anywhere I can get the solution for these tests? or any sample tests you have with solutions? It's tough to find motivation to do the test when we don't have solutions to check.

I took the general test last Sunday and there were a few things that might be helpful to know in advance but nobody'd told me before.

First, if you are an international student taking the test in the U.S., you need to bring two photo ID's, one is your passport, the other can be a state ID or DL. I didn't have both, so I had to go home and come back an hour later. Fortunately, the test is computer-adaptive, and the staff was lenient enough to let me do that.

Second, after you finish the test, you will have to decide whether or not you want your score reported. If you do, they let you pick up to four graduate programs you want to send the report to. However, you may send your score to 4 additional schools after you get out of the test room without charge. So, if you have more than 4 schools in mind, you may want to have their ETS codes as well as the department/major codes handy. Because if you don't, you have to pay everytime you want to send it later on.

'To send or not to send' the report can be a tough question, IMHO at least. As you may know, the test generally comprises of 3 parts: writing, verbal, and math. The writing cannot be graded immediately, so if you are applying to programs where writing score is important than, you may want to think twice before you decide whether or not you want it reported. The verbal and the math, you have a better sense of how you do along the questions. Since it's computer adaptive, if you get one question correct, your next one is likely harder (or statistically harder). But, this is also relative. As I proceeded in the verbal section, I found all questions quite challenging, to be honest. There were many words I just saw for the first time, so I just sort of made 'educated guesses'. I didn't feel very good about the verbal part. But as it turned out, the math section was more disappointing to me. I spent so ridiculously much time on some questions in the middle that I ended up not finishing the test (THIS IS REALLY BAD). So, no matter what, just guess and move on, it will stil be better than not finish the test.

This is only my first time taking the GRE General Test, but I have little intention to retake it though I am not very pleased with my math score. Keep in mind that you can take the test only once a month, and (10) times a year (I am not sure about this number). The score can be improved simply by practicing a lot to get familiar with pacing the test. I didn't take any test prep course, but another test taker said such a course helped her improve her score. She obviously took it multiple times.

As far as preparing for the test, I spent most of my time memorizing flashcards and world lists, but it's never enough. Materials I used include the Kaplan's 594 GRE Words Flashcard (available at Border's), GRE WordSmart by Princeton Review, the 2 sample tests in the Prep CD sent by ETS when I registered for the test. I didn't really practice any math other than do those in the sample tests.

One last thing: no matter how bad your scores may be, you can always improve them the next time you take the test. Just don't cheat, getting caught will erase any chance of you being admitted to any grad school, worse yet, ETS will stop the test in Vietnam, and that will hurt your friends back home.

It's just a basic requirement that you may encounter at most governmental offices in US, esp. the Social Security Office.

hey viet,
when u register for the GRE, ETS will send u a CD with practice questions and two samples tests. for the verbal section, i used a Kaplan flash card book because i was too lazy/busy to make them myself. for the word list, u can google it online and make the flash cards urself if ur not lazy or busy (some suggests that writing the cards helps memorize the words).
as if i hadn't stressed it enough, learn from my mistake and try to finish the test no matter what. the questions might get harder especially when u get near the end but some of them might not even count toward ur score.

to duy, wait.. why'd u ask that question when u already have two photo ID's (jk)

No..I don't have 2 government-issued IDs..I don't have driver license or state ID, so passport is the only ID i have..But if u count college ID as photo ID, yeah..maybe..

The revised GRE General Test won't be introduced until the fall of 2007. So, class of 2007, if you are planning to attend graduate school, keep on studying the old GRE with the same old format (and you thought you would never have to deal with standarized tests again after the SAT).

I didn't study anything for the first time, and as a result, didn't do so hot. Shame. The second time, I used the Kaplan GRE Exam Verbal Workbook, studied like a nuthead (this rarely happens for 2 weeks straight, and fortunately, survived. This book includes helpful lists of frequently-seen words, word roots, and a CD with several practice exams. I highly recommend it.

To volunteer, I suppose I should give a few examples of LSAT logic games first. I am vaguely aware of the 5 categories into which many prep books have classified these games, but I will only give a couple categories of my own.

The following games are taken from Kaplan LSAT Prep book of 2005 (old, old, old stuff, I know). I redistribute this material for the purpose of demonstration only and not for commercial means. (This crap is in case Kaplan found out about this and pressed charge against us.)

I) Put them in order.
Setting: For a family portrait, seven members of the Ellis family- Feisal, Gillian, Helen, Ian, Jeremy, Khalia, and Laura - stand in positions numbered one through seven from left to right, according to the following conditions:
+ Feisal and Gillian do not stand next to each other.
+ Exactly two people stand between Helen and Feisal.
+ Ian and Feisal stand next to each other.
+ Khalia and Gillian do not stand next to each other.
+ Helen's position is exactly two places to the left of Gillian's position.

Questions:
1) Which one of the following is an acceptable arrangement of family members from left to right?
a) Feisal, Ian, Helen, Jeremy, Gillian, Laura, Khalia
b) Feisal, Ian, Khalia, Helen, Jeremy, Gillian, Laura
c) Feisal, Khalia, Ian, Gillian, Jeremy, Helen, Laura
d) Jeremy, Feisal, Ian, Laura, Helen, Khalia
e) Khalia, Jeremy, Ian, Feisal, Gillian, Laura, Helen

2) If Laura stands in position one, the Jeremy must stand
a) between Gillian and Helen
b) between Ian and Laura
c) next to Feisal
d) next to Khalia
e) in position seven

3) If Laura stands next to Feisal, which one of the following CANNOT be true?
a) Gillian stands in position seven.
b) Ian stands in position one.
c) Ian stands between Feisal and Khalia.
d) Jeremy stands between Helen and Ian.
e) Laura stands between Feisal and Khalia.

That's that for now. More will come once this thread generates a healthy response.

+ Feisal and Gillian do not stand next to each other. (1)
+ Exactly two people stand between Helen and Feisal. (2)
+ Ian and Feisal stand next to each other. (3)
+ Khalia and Gillian do not stand next to each other. (4)
+ Helen's position is exactly two places to the left of Gillian's position. (5)

Question 1
From (2) and (5) , we have 2 ways to arrange Feisal, Helen and Gillian :
... Feisal , _ , _ , Helen , _ , Gillian ...
or ... Helen , _ , Gillian , Feisal , ...
But follow condition (1) , the formal are true => The answer is B

Question 2
From the result we got in question 1:
Laura stands in position 1
Feisal stands in position 2
Helan stands in position 5
Gillian stands in position 7

However Khalia and Gillian do not stand next to each other (4) => Jeremy stands in position 6 => The answer is A

Question 3
If Laura stands in position 1 (next to Feisal) => A and C are true.
If Laura stands in position 3 (Ian stands in position 1) => B and E are true.
=> the answer is D.

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Latanya Sweeney <latanya@lab.privacy.cs.cmu.edu>
Date: Nov 10, 2006 10:15 AM
Subject: Wanted: A few good students
To:

The PhD Program in Computation, Organizations and Society (COS)
at Carnegie Mellon University's School of Computer Science
is looking for a few good students to help save the world.
All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.
Please spread the word. (www.cos.cs.cmu.edu)

COS prepares students to be tomorrow's leaders in constructing,
evaluating, and reasoning with software that is accountable to society,
business, policy, and law. Carnegie Mellon's innovative program fuses
disciplines as diverse as organizational behavior, psychology,
biology, privacy, social network analysis, artificial intelligence and
computation.
Combining both empirical and computational approaches, students
partner in the creation, evaluation and use of future computational tools,
measures, and technologies for meeting diverse needs and increasing
the scientific, organizational and policy understanding of complex social,
corporate, market, legal, national, and international issues.

At present, 50% of COS graduates go directly to faculty appointments
at leading universities, 17% assume government jobs,
and 33% accept Post-Doc positions upon graduation.

Graduate Research Assistantships (which cover tuition and stipend)
are available for incoming students in many areas.
Some particular areas in which research assistants are currently sought include:

* biometrics (fingerprints, face recognition)
* medical and DNA privacy (data anonymization, data mining)
* identity management
* homeland security (privacy-enhanced link analysis)
* assistive technology for the aging

Research areas of COS faculty in which Research Assistantships
are generally available include:
Automated negotiation
Dynamic network modeling and analysis
Electronic market mechanisms
Identity Management and Biometrics
Privacy technology (including surveillance, video, GPS)
Spam prevention technologies
Privacy rights managements
Usable security and privacy

Students in COS are expected to come directly from undergraduate
programs or from industry or government. Students must have an
undergraduate and/or master level degree and are expected to already
have had a solid exposure to computation and math/science. Students
apply to COS because of their desire to do research at the confluence
of computer science, management, social science, law and/or policy.
Students are expected to generally be pioneers who are unsatisfied
with traditional degree programs and have strong interest in transdisciplinary
research incorporating vigorous computational approaches.

More information about the program is available at www.cos.cs.cmu.edu.
Further information: contact Connie Herold, Program Manager, at (412)268-4545.
Deadline: December 15, 2006.
